The so-called WHOIS details of each registered domain include information about the registrar organization, the registration and expiration dates, as well as the names, phone number, postal address and e-mail address of the owner, the admin and the tech/billing person. WHOIS is a special protocol that enables you to retrieve all of this info through a command line or via one of the many sites that provide WHOIS lookup services. All details must be up-to-date in accordance with the policies of ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. If some of the details are not legitimate, the internet domain can be reported and the result may be its removal or losing its ownership. A number of country-specific domain name extensions have certain limitations regarding the change of their WHOIS details, but in the standard case any detail can be edited easily and at any time. Such a change will appear on lookup websites within a day.
